The Pirates Are Coming!!!

The Old Baldy Lighthouse and Smith Island Museum of History (on nearby Bald Head Island) are staging a weekend day pirate extravaganza event in conjunction with National Lighthouse Day.

These events will make for fun day trips for guests of The Winds. It is a short drive and ferry boat ride to the island from Ocean Isle and it looks to be great fun for all ages!

Test your skills in this pirate challenge designed for families. The idea for creating Father’s Day, a day for children to honor their fathers, was first thought of by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. Sonora was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909 in Spokane, Washington when the idea for Father’s Day came to her.

Her father, William Jackson Smart, had raised her after her mother died and Sonora wanted to let father know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

A National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City in 1926. Father’s Day was finally recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.

So Father’s Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother’s Day.

Sea Turtles on Bald Head Island

hatchlings1004 The sea turtles are coming ashore nightly and nesting on the area beaches including Bald Head Island. Area turtle watch organizations are keeping an eye out for mother turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. The Bald Head Island Conservancy Sea Turtle Protection Program is constantly patrolling the beach. Later in this article is a list of things you can do to help protect sea turtles coming to Bald Head Island.

The Winds Resort Beach Club, an oceanfront resort hotel on nearby Ocean Isle Beach has “adopted” a sea turtle nest and they want your help naming their Turtle!

Gloria Hillenburg – Coordinator of the Ocean Isle Beach Turtle Patrol says “Mother turtles continue to come in and lay their eggs just about nightly and new nests are discovered constantly. We are there to protect them and get their babies out to sea to make their long journey, only to return to our Island and start the process all over again.”

You can help the turtles when you visit Bald Head Island by following a few simple guidelines:

Do Not Disturb: If you see an adult sea turtle coming on shore, stay quiet and keep your distance! Otherwise she may get scared and go back into the ocean without nesting. They are an endangered species and it is a federal offense to harass them.

Turn Off All Flashlights! Lights may scare or confuse the adult female and cause her to leave without nesting.

Lights Cause Hatchlings To Go In the Wrong Direction: Please turn off all outside lights each night. Also if there are curtains or blinds use them so your indoor lights do not lead the hatchlings away from the ocean.

Never Pick Up A Hatchling. It is critical that they crawl on their own.
Do Not Disturb The Nest Area. Watch for the nest markers.

Stay Off Sand Dunes & Do Not Pick Sea Oats. Sand dunes provide critical habitat for sea turtles and help prevent flooding during times of extreme tides and storms. Foot traffic kills plants and severely damages the sand dunes. The penalty for failure to adhere to this requirement is a $100 fine.

Help Us Keep Our Beaches Clean -Sea turtles may mistake a plastic bag or other forms of litter for a jellyfish (they eat them). All personal items and equipment must be removed from the beach each day- these items may trap a sea turtle.

Please Fill In All Holes On The Beach When Done Playing.- Holes can trap sea turtles and are a safety hazard to humans.

Keep Dogs On Leashes At All Times!– No dogs shall be permitted on the beach strand between the hours of 9:00am and 6:00pm during period of Memorial Day through Labor Day regardless of whether they are leashed or not.

Fireworks can scare off nesting sea turtles and leave behind trash that may be mistaken for food by marine wildlife.- Discharge of fireworks is not permitted per North Carolina state laws.

Please Report all sightings of nesting turtles, dead turtles, unmarked nests or crawls (looks like a bulldozer came out of the water).

Bald Head In The Movies

A number of high profile movies have been filmed on Bald Head Island over the years. The following are three of the most famous. Next time you watch one keep an eye out for scenes from your favorite island vacation spot!

Weekend At Bernie’s was filmed on Bald Head in 1989. The film stars Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman as two friends who are invited for a weekend to a luxury island with their boss.

The boss gets shot and nobody seems to notice, except for the two friends.

In order not to become suspects of murder they treat the body as a puppet and make people believe he’s still alive.

The killer wants to do his job so when he is informed that the stiff is still alive he’s got to shoot him again, and again, and again.

The Butcher’s Wife, starring Demi Moore, Jeff Daniels and Mary Steenburgen, was filmed in 1991 on Bald Head Island. In the film a clairvoyant thinks she’s met her husband to be because she’s seen him in her dreams.

They marry quickly, and return to the husband’s (“the butcher”), home in the city.

She has a big impact on everyone she meets by anticipating their questions and actions and advising them on their love life.Her interference then brings her into contact with the real man of her dreams.

Another famous movie with scenes filmed on the island is Sleeping With The Enemy

In the movie Julia Roberts plays Laura Burney, an abused wife who fakes her own drowning, flees to the Midwest and begins a new life in a small college town.

Laura and Martin have been married for four years. They seem to be the perfect, happiest and most successful couple. The reality of their house- hold, however, is very different. Martin is an abusive and brutally obsessed husband. Laura is living her life in constant fear and waits for a chance to escape. She finally stages her own death, and flees to a new town and new identity. But when Martin finds out that his wife is not dead he will stop at nothing to find and kill her.
