Become a Citizen Scientist (no experience necessary!) and learn more about dune health and coastal integrity as we measure the dune width all around the island! Bald Head Island contains an extremely healthy and well developed dune system. This system protects the island and residents from storm impacts and acts as a first line of defense. To monitor dune integrity, dune width is measured on a monthly basis along 28 predetermined transects. To register, please contact Courtney Spears at [email protected] We will meet in the Barrier Island Study Center at 8:00am to begin training and collect our sampling materials – hope to see you there!

The BHI Conservancy eagerly recruits volunteers for its citizen scientist program. Volunteers must be at least twelve years of age (younger scientists may join if joined by an adult guardian) and excited to learn and work in the BHI environment. Whether volunteers have one hour per week or ten plus hours per week to donate, there is a project for everyone. To learn more about this and other projects, please contact Courtney Spears, Coastal Ecologist, at 910-338-0942 or [email protected]
